CLASSROOM-BASED INTERN/SUBSTITUTE
Head Start Program – Southern Region
Part-time, as-needed
Fall or Spring semester
Internship hours are unpaid. Paid position if providing coverage as a substitute. All hours can go towards internship.
General Responsibility: Ensure a safe, healthy learning environment for children ages 18 months-5 years old. Tri-County Community Action Southern Region has one Early Head Start classroom (18 months-3 years old), four Basic Head Start classrooms (3-5 years old) and one State Pre-K classroom (4-5 years old).
Specific Responsibilities: The classroom-based intern/substitute will have one “home-base” classroom per program need. Must also be able to travel to any of our three locations: North Kingstown, South Kingstown, and Westerly. Will assist in providing classroom coverage where needed. Provide an environment that is socially and emotionally supportive to children and their families. Assist the teaching staff, as directed, in conducting daily, age-appropriate activities for the children. Help with the necessary steps to implementing mealtime. Eat with and assist children in the development of social and self-help skills and sound nutritional practices. Give assistance to the teaching staff, as directed, in preparing, setting up, conducting and cleaning up daily, age-appropriate activities for the children. Observe/participate in afterschool meetings alongside classroom staff, including but not limited to: lesson planning, assessments/observations, home visits and/or family conferences, profile meetings, supervisions, and professional development trainings. Intern/floater will be supervised under Education Coordinator and Lead Teachers. Monthly check-ins with intern/floater in regards to internship course’s requirements.
Qualifications: Enrolled in a college course in which an internship in the field is required. Must be able to travel to any of our three locations: North Kingstown, South Kingstown, and Westerly. CPR/First Aid certified preferred, but not required. Tri-County will help intern obtain CPR/First Aid certification if needed.
Special Qualifications: Be at least 18 years of age. Must be able to work in a team environment with staff and families, be creative, and have good communication and leadership skills. Willingness to be flexible to meet the needs of the program.
