The BNSF Railway Engineering Department is responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining the infrastructure of our extensive rail network. This crucial role involves applying advanced engineering principles to address complex challenges, ensuring the safety and efficiency of our operations. Join our team and play a key role in shaping the future of freight transportation and make a significant contribution to one of the top railroads in North America.

This is a full-time position based within the North West Division (TBD), and is subject to on-call responsibilities for emergency situations, as well as rotating shifts that may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays

This is a full-time position located in North West Division (TBD)

Travel is required approximately 70%+

This position reports to the General Director Line Maintenance

Key responsibilities may include:

Assist the General Director Line Maintenance in directing the ongoing prioritization, scheduling, and execution of the capital and operating production maintenance activities across the division

Ensure proper work program reporting

Coordinate maintenance activities with division Signal, Roadway Equipment, Transportation, and Structures groups

Ensure compliance with safety rules, work practices, labor policies, regulatory requirements and personnel hiring and training objectives across the division

Assist System Engineering personnel in developing capital maintenance and capital expansion plans.

Manage capital and operating budgets for the division

Supervise Division Assistant Roadmasters

Daily work is conducted in an indoor/outdoor safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be BNSF Tier III certified by a Manager of Engineering Certification
  • Experience working in all phases of Maintenance of Way Engineering and Construction
  • Able to work 24/7 as required to meet customer and business needs, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Must have strong knowledge of railroad union agreements
  • Able to work around heavy and moving machinery, and in conditions that include loud noise and fumes
  • Willing to work extra hours to meet deadlines
  • Subject to “on-call” and must respond to emergencies at any time
  • Capability to work in an office or field environment, climb ladders and walk on uneven surfaces safely
  • Willing to travel to various locations in a geographic region and remain on site for extended periods, sometimes days or weeks at a time
  • Must have superior knowledge of General Operating and Safety Rules
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills, including effective oral and written communication skills, managerial and leadership ability
  • Computer literacy and basic accounting skills are required

Preferred Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or other engineering/construction management-related field
  • 10 + years of experience working in Maintenance of Way Engineering and Construction
  • Experience with financial applications and budget management
  • Advanced skills in the use of Microsoft desktop applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of company operations relative to the Engineering Department
